Slukat Learning Center, Bali

December 14, 2011

The Slukat Learning Center was founded in 2007 to provide underprivileged children in the area with English and computer skills necessary to thrive in the dominant industry, tourism and to build their self-confidence through extra-curricular activities including Balinese traditional dance and yoga.

The center relies on volunteers, who come to the village of Keramas (20 minutes east of Ubud) to teach the children and experience the real Bali by interacting with the local Balinese community.   There are a variety of volunteering activities to choose from including the following:

  • Teaching English classes:  volunteers work with children ranging in age from 9 to 17 years, teaching varying levels of English including Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced.
  • Teaching computer classes:  volunteers teach children between the ages of 15 to 19 years old, teaching them basic internet skills and how to use Microsoft office.
  • Teaching Day Care (Playgroup):  volunteers work with toddlers, teaching them the alphabet, teaching them to count and providing them with nutrition.
  • Teaching and working in the organic garden: volunteers educate the children about the importance of the environment and work with them in the garden, planting seeds, watering and tending the plants and composting.
  • Teaching in the Family Program:  the parents can volunteer in the day care, the organic garden or the classrooms, teaching English and computer classes while the children help out in the organic garden or participate in the class.
